Best for Embedded/White-Label Analytics

Looker Review

A strong governed semantic layer for embedded analytics — priced opaquely enough that you'll need a sales call to know what it costs.

7.5/ 10

Looker's governed LookML semantic layer is a genuine strength for embedded and white-label analytics, but Google publishes no list pricing at all — third-party deal data puts the average contract around $150,000/year — which is itself a real trade-off worth weighing before you start evaluating it.

PriceNo public pricing — average annual contract reported around $150,000/year (third-party deal data); Looker Studio Pro (a separate, lighter product) is $9/user/mo
Best forOrganizations building embedded or white-label analytics that need one governed source of truth
Overall score7.5 / 10

Pros

  • LookML's governed semantic modeling layer creates one genuine source of truth, valuable specifically for embedded or white-label analytics products
  • Gemini-powered Conversational Analytics went GA with natural-language queries, a Code Interpreter for Python-based forecasting, and cross-Explore analysis across up to 5 Explores at once
  • Gemini insights are now embedded directly in alert notifications, not just in dashboards
  • Strong fit for engineering-led organizations that want to build data products, not just consume dashboards

Cons

  • No public list pricing at all — every deal is negotiated individually, and third-party data puts the average around $150,000/year with Standard editions estimated $35K–$66.6K/year
  • LookML has a steep, developer-oriented learning curve that bottlenecks non-technical users behind engineering
  • Ongoing labor cost of maintaining hand-written LookML models is a real, often underestimated recurring cost beyond the license fee
  • Easy to confuse with the free, separate "Looker Studio" product (formerly Google Data Studio) — the enterprise LookML platform reviewed here is a distinct, much more expensive product

Looker's real strength is specific: if you're building an analytics product that needs to be embedded in your own application or white-labeled for customers, LookML's governed semantic layer gives you one modeling source of truth that's genuinely harder to achieve with dashboard-first tools like Tableau or Power BI. The 2025-2026 Gemini additions (Conversational Analytics, Code Interpreter, cross-Explore analysis) meaningfully extend what a business user can do without touching LookML directly.

The honest problem is pricing opacity. We could not find a single published price on Looker's own site — every number in this review comes from third-party deal-tracking data, and an average contract around $150,000/year (with Standard editions estimated $35K–$66.6K/year) is a genuinely different conversation than the transparent per-seat pricing of Power BI or Tableau. That opacity is itself a real trade-off, not just an inconvenience for a reviewer.

Our take: Looker earns real consideration if embedded/white-label analytics with a governed semantic layer is specifically your use case, and you have the engineering resources to maintain LookML models. For general internal BI, the pricing transparency and lower cost of Power BI make it the easier default.
