ActiveCampaign Review
The deepest branching automation and built-in CRM of any platform we tested — with a real ramp-up period.
Last updated July 7, 2026
ActiveCampaign's branching workflows, lead scoring, and built-in CRM/sales automation are the most sophisticated we tested, starting around $15/month at 1,000 contacts, but expect a real 2-4 week learning curve and a bill that can grow sharply as your list does.
| Price | No free tier (14-day trial) → ~$15/mo Starter → ~$49/mo Plus → ~$79/mo Professional → ~$145/mo Enterprise (at 1,000 contacts) |
| Best for | Teams that want deep, branching marketing automation combined with built-in sales/CRM workflows |
| Overall score | 8.4 / 10 |
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Branching automation workflows and lead scoring are the most sophisticated of any platform tested in this category
- Built-in CRM and sales automation at higher tiers mean marketing and sales workflows can genuinely share one system
- Over 25 AI agents shipped since the "Active Intelligence" relaunch, covering content generation to workflow building
- March 2026 additions — AI Performance Intelligence (benchmarks your campaigns against platform-wide data) and AI Behavior Customization (persistent brand-voice instructions) — are genuinely differentiated AI features, not generic writing helpers
- Rule-building has moved from single-message prompts to a back-and-forth conversational flow, making automation easier to iterate on
Cons
- Steep learning curve is the most-cited complaint on review sites, with 2-4 weeks commonly reported before a new user is fully comfortable
- Pricing escalates sharply with list growth — some users report bills roughly doubling within a year of organic list growth
- No free tier at all, only a 14-day trial
- Lower-tier support response times of 24-72 hours are slow relative to how quickly a broken automation can affect revenue
- Accounts created on or after November 3, 2025 are billed on total contacts including unsubscribed/bounced ones

Full Verdict
ActiveCampaign's automation builder is the most capable we tested in this category — real branching logic, lead scoring, and a built-in CRM mean marketing and sales can run on genuinely connected workflows rather than handing off leads between disconnected tools. The March 2026 AI additions (Performance Intelligence benchmarking, persistent brand-voice customization) go further than most competitors' AI toolkits, which are still mostly content-generation helpers.
That sophistication is also the cost: this isn't a platform most teams are fully productive on in week one, and the pricing curve as your list grows is steep enough that some users report bills roughly doubling within a year. Budget both the ramp-up time and the growth-adjusted cost before committing, not just the entry-tier price.
Our take: choose ActiveCampaign specifically if branching automation depth and connected sales/marketing workflows are worth a real learning investment. If you want to be sending effective campaigns in your first afternoon, Mailchimp is the easier start.
